Is it required to have a unlimited data plan with andriod?

I have a package that includes 75mb ( it was some promotion thing) for $10. I have a verizon samsung which is not a smart phone kinda thing. Just wondering if i were to buy a andriod type phone off craigslist or if a friend gave me one could I just swap my number to that phone and not have to buy the unlimited data plan?
