What is the best way to start learning about carpentry?

My parents recently bought a "fixer upper" house and neither one of them are handy. Sadly, it seems that I'm following in their footsteps. I've got alot of good carpenters in my family but they all live too far away to help. I'm not looking to learn to build a house from the ground up but it would be nice if I could learn a few things abotu fixing up a house. Any ideas? Thank you.
